The woman in black monologue
Theatre and terror tend not to be words you see in the same sentence, the ability to create an atmosphere that will instil fear in theatregoers is a challenging task. Thankfully it was all a ruse and what followed was a real pleasure to watch. The Actor Matt Connor helps bring life to this story revolving around death, turning a monotone monologue into a terrifying theatrical production. The Woman In Black is a celebration of theatre as much as it is a tale of terror. As the duo rehearse their play to any empty audience they rejoice in marvels such as recorded sound and the potential of the imagination of an audience horse-drawn carriages and pet dogs are brought to life before our eyes.
I like the format of this book. As a director and acting teacher, I distrust books that provide the monologues. It often means that the actor has not read the entire play. So they lack any depth to their performances. All monologue books should use this format. Account Options Sign in.

The character of Jennet Humfrye appears throughout the story as a ghost: a woman in black. Every time she is seen, a child in the village dies. We learn from Samuel Daily that she is the ghost of Jennet Humfrye, a young woman who had a baby out of wedlock. This was not socially acceptable during Edwardian times. The Woman In Black – Kings Theatre, Edinburgh
Suddenly conscious of the cold and the extreme bleakness and eeriness of the spot and of the gathering dusk of the November afternoon, and not wanting my spirits to become so depressed that I might begin to be affected by all sorts of morbid fancies, I was about to leave […] But, as I turned away, I glanced once again round the burial ground and then I saw again the woman with the wasted face, who had been at Mrs. Drablow's funeral. It was one of what I can only describe—and the words seem hopelessly inadequate to express what I saw—as a desperate, yearning malevolence; it was as though she were searching for something she wanted, needed— must have , more than life itself, and which had been taken from her. And, toward whoever had taken it she directed the purest evil and hatred and loathing, with all the force that was available to her.
I remember the first time I saw that strange young man from London. What a sorry sight he was, in his black bowler hat, long black coat and solemn look, as if he knew and had respect for my sister. The temerity of the man. The gall of such a character as he, a mere lawyer and a junior one at that. The bravado of the man for being with that horrible little man who turns away every time I arrive on the scene. They all hate me and they have good reason to as well.
