It was the NFL's annual spring meeting in March of , and team owners, league and team executives, and reporters were congregated at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, Florida, talking shop and trading gossip. But the mood was oddly subdued. The previous night had gone so late that a janitor had started to clean the floors as a few executives and reporters remained anchored at the bar, refusing to let the night end even though it was well into morning. So the second night -- this night -- was slow, chill, sleepy even, until a group of men, in a baritone howl, launched into a barroom rendition of a classic that "Top Gun" fans would love:.

We are unsure of the original of this letter, but we wanted to share it, for it is a wonderful read. Remember, all it takes is one small moment in time to turn it all around. I dropped forty-eight bombs. But in the eyes of my superiors, I had served my country honorably, and I was thusly discharged with such distinction.

I walked for hours. Then I roamed through the Common, scaled the hill with its golden dome, and meandered into that charming labyrinth divided by Hanover Street. By the time I reached the waterfront, a charcoal sky had opened and a drizzle became a shower.

That shower soon gave way to a deluge. While the other pedestrians darted for awnings and lobbies, I trudged into the rain. I suppose I thought, or rather hoped, that it might wash away the patina of guilt that had coagulated around my heart.

You were wearing a teal ball gown, which appeared to me both regal and ridiculous. Your brown hair was matted to the right side of your face, and a galaxy of freckles dusted your shoulders. I asked if you were okay.

You said only if I would join you. We sat at the counter of that five and dime and talked like old friends. A Cabot, or maybe a Chaffee. For my part, I shared more of myself than I could have imagined possible at that time. Still, your eyes offered no pity, and I loved you for it. After an hour or so, I excused myself to use the restroom.

I remember consulting my reflection in the mirror. I decided, ultimately, that I was unworthy of the resuscitation this stranger in the teal ball gown had given me, and to turn my back on such sweet serendipity would be the real disgrace.

But when I reached the stools, you were gone. No phone number. No note. As strangely as our union had begun, so too had it ended. I was devastated. Ironically, the torture of your abandonment seemed to swallow my self-loathing, and the prospect of suicide was suddenly less appealing than the prospect of discovering what had happened in that restaurant. The truth is I never really stopped wondering. He suggested I look for you on Facebook. Time is cruel that way.

This same friend has a particularly sentimental daughter. And you were the source of all of it. I have hard days, too. My wife passed four years ago. My son, the year after.

I cry a lot. Sometimes I can still smell the smoke over Hanoi. The sky will glower, and the clouds will hide the sun, and the rain will begin to fall. If you are dealing with strong issues and battling yourself inside, reach out, get help or just talk to someone. Like it? Share it! Prev Article Next Article. You may also like.

The Man Who Changed Everything: The Life of James Clerk Maxwell

Produced by Tony Visconti , it was recorded at Trident and Advision Studios in London in May , towards the end of the album's sessions; Bowie recorded his vocal on the final day of mixing for the album, reflecting his generally dismissive attitude during the sessions. Musically, it is based around a "circular" guitar riff from Mick Ronson. Its lyrics are cryptic and evocative, being inspired by numerous poems including The Psychoed by William Hughes Mearns.

Leading scientists have always recognised Maxwell as a giant figure and he holds a unique position among them, inspiring both wonder and affection. In life, he was a blend of opposites - a serious man who saw fun everywhere, a hopeless teacher who inspired students, a shy man who was the hub of any gathering where he felt at ease. He introduces us to people in desperate need, whose lives are miraculously changed forever, leaving us breathlessly expectant to see what will happen next. Like a detective, Helen Hunter exercises her theological training and her background as a translator to meticulously piece together the events of Jesus' life, and to answer so many of the questions left unanswered in the Gospels. What should we pay for with our foreign aid? Shah steered more money to farmers, especially small farmers, and over the course of five years saw the results all over the world: Some of the poorest people were able to feed their families, send their kids to school, and save up money. When Thomas Hardy and Leslie Stephen met in they discussed, Hardy tells us, "theologies decayed and defunct, the origin of things, the constitution of matter, the unreality of time.
